On September 11, 2020, the first mobile forensics center in Korea was opened under the SW Center University Project Group.
Mobile forensics is a field in which digital forensic technology and techniques are used in combination with mobile device analysis technology in order to recover, collect, and analyze data from such devices as smartphones, tablet PCs, and PDAs to gain evidence to be used in criminal investigations or legal disputes.

In particular, the main targets for analysis in mobile forensics are flash memory storage and physical RAM memory inside the various mobile devices.
Additionally, MicroSD and USIM are analyzed, and deleted photos and videos, conversation records, and other sought-after data can be recovered.
Being of great significance as the first center of its kind in Korea, the opening event drew a great deal of media attention. It was also brightened by the presence of DSU President Chang Jekuk, who showed great interest.
Kim Yong-ho (College of Software Convergence), Director of the Mobile Forensic Center commented, “Previously, the field of digital forensics, focusing on devices with hard disk drives, was paramount.

However, with the recent rapid increase in the numbers of mobile devices in operation such as smartphones and tablet PCs, and a corresponding decline in devices using hard disk drives, the field of mobile forensics is gaining much more importance.”

He continued, “Our university’s ‘AI Mobile Forensics Research Institute’ is already the first such research institute in the Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam Province regions, providing in-depth mobile forensics training for criminal investigators. However, there has been no formal certification available previously. Now, however, through the addition of the Center, an official license will be attainable for investigators, and a systematic process of education, certification, and project execution will be utilized to obtain evidence up to the standards of being permissible to be used in courts. In addition, our fields of research are to be expanded, focusing on analyzing mobile malicious codes and developing vaccines.”

With the increasing penetration rate of smart devices, it is expected that the field of mobile forensics is likewise going to be immense importance in the coming decades.
