수십 개의 아시아대학 학생들이 이번 여름방학에 동서대학교 캠퍼스에 모였다.

13개국 42개 대학이 공동 운영하는 여름방학 계절학기인 제7회 아시아섬머프로그램(ASP: Asia Summer Program)이 7월 9일부터 27일까지 3주 동안 동서대학교에서 열리고 있다.

이번 ASP에 참여하는 나라는 한국, 일본, 중국, 태국, 필리핀, 인도네시아, 싱가포르, 베트남 등 모두 13개 국가다.

참가대학은 말라야대(말레이시아), 페트라 크리스찬대(인도네시아), 조사이국제대(일본), 광동외어외무대(중국), 싱가포르사회과학대(싱가포르), 방콕대(태국), 다포딜국제대(방글라데시), 비콜대(필리핀), 미콜라스 로메리스대(리투아니아), 노튼대(캄보디아) 등 42개 대학이다. 이번 ASP에 참가하는 학생 수는 동서대를 포함한 42개 대학에 369명이다.

이들 대학에서는 모두 40명의 교수를 동서대 캠퍼스로 파견해서 3주과정의 37개 과목을 영어로 강의하고 있다.

특히 올해는 아시아적 가치를 추구하는 과목이 많이 개설된 것이 특징이다.

예컨대 태국 나레수안대학에서 참가하는 폰감 리암시리와타나 교수는 ‘21 세기의 의사 소통 기술’라는 과목을 30시간에 걸쳐 영어로 강의한다. 또 인도네시아 페트라 크리스찬대학의 릴리엑 소엘리스툐교수는 ‘아시아 드라마’라는 과목을 개설했고, 일본경제대학의 고토 토시오교수는 ‘일본 문명과 동아시아의 기원’이라는 과목, 중국 광동외어외무대학 우천루 교수는 ‘재화, 은행 및 경제시장’라는 과정의 3주짜리 강의를 맡았다.

주최 대학인 동서대에서는 교수 4명이 ‘ 문화컨텐츠 산업과 한류’ ‘한국 영화 속 명대사와 세계 명작’ 등 4개 과정을 개설했다.

강의는 모두 영어로 진행하며, 참가 학생들은 3주 동안 2개 강좌를 선택해 수강하고 있다. 과정을 모두 마치면 총 4학점을 인정받게 된다. 국내외 참가 학생들은 프로그램 기간 동안 옵션투어 및 다양한 문화체험 활동을 통해 국제 친선교류를 하고 있다.

동서대 장제국 총장은 ”ASP를 통해 아시아 지역 대학들과 긴밀한 네트워크를 구축하는 것은 물론이고 참여대학 학생들의 이문화 이해와 글로벌 소통능력 향상에 큰 도움이 될 것“이라며 ”아시아 시대를 맞아 아시아를 무대로 활동할 국제적 인재를 양성하는데 최선을 다할 것”이라고 강조했다.

아시아대학총장포럼이 개설

아시아서머프로그램(ASP)은 아시아 시대를 맞이해 아시아 지역의 특성을 잘 이해하며 인적·문화적 교류의 기본인 영어능력을 갖추고 개방적인 마음으로 다양한 문화를 이해할 수 있는 창조적 인재를 키우기 위한 프로그램이다.

아시아대학총장포럼이 아시아를 잘 이해하는 인재를 육성하기 위해 ASP를 개설하기로 합의한 후 첫 번째 ASP는 2012년 인도네시아 페트라 크리스찬대학에서 개최됐다.

이어 ▲2013년 동서대 ▲2014년 말레이시아 펠리스대학 ▲2015년 일본 조사이대학 ▲2016년 태국 방콕대학 ▲2017년 중국 광동외국어대학에서 개최됐다.

2018년 ASP를 포함하면 지금까지 총 7차례의 아시아서머프로그램이 열리게 되었고, 이중 2차례를 동서대에서 주최하게 되는 것이다.

2013년 동서대 ASP에서는 11개국 27개 대학의 재학생 350여명이 참가했다. 당시에는 25개 과목이 개설됐다.

고등교육 국제화 촉진하기 위한 다양한 방안 논의

동서대는 아시아섬머프로그램 개막에 앞서 참가 대학 10개국 16개 대학 총장들을 초청해 센텀캠퍼스에서 ‘고등교육 국제화 우수 사례’라는 주제로 총장회의를 개최했다.

장제국 총장이 ‘Best Practices in the Internationalization of higher Education’이라는 제목으로 발제를 한 뒤 참가대학 총장들 간에 교육의 국제화를 더 촉진하기 위한 다양한 의견교환을 했다.

총장회의에는 동서대, 인도네시아 페트라 크리스찬대, 필리핀 팬퍼시픽대학, 일본 조사이국제대, 말레이시아 펠리스대학 등 16개 대학의 총장 또는 부총장들이 참석했다.

Hello everyone! 안녕하세요!

We are honored to have roughly 450 students and professors join us from 42 universities in 13 countries and regions for the 2018 Asia Summer Program. It’s a pleasure to welcome all of you to Dongseo University in Busan, Korea!

To begin, I’d like to express my thanks to representatives of the other ASP founding universities: Dr. Djwantoro Hardjito, Rector of Petra Christian University; Dr. Mathana Santiwat, Former President of Bangkok University; Zul Azhar Zahid Jamal, Vice Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Perlis, and Dr. Kenji Sugibayashi, President of Josai International University. We created the ASP together in 2012, and it’s an honor to have you join us at Dongseo for the opening ceremony of ASP 2018.

I would also like to thank Kamarudin Hussin, Chairman of Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, who was one of the original founding members of ASP; and Yang Aimin, Vice President of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, which hosted ASP 2017 last year.

This program was established with the idea of fostering awareness of Asia’s diversity and regional issues. The leaders of its founding institutions recognized Asia’s growing global importance. And we agreed that Asian universities should cooperate to offer students the chance to share their cultures and learn together through direct experience. So far, the ASP has been hosted in six different countries, and it has brought together over 1000 students and professors from universities in 20 countries.

Our aim has always been to cultivate future leaders. We strive to achieve this goal by instilling students with cultural understanding, developing their creative abilities, and preparing them to collaborate on an international stage. The world is more interconnected today than ever before, and it’s essential that we learn to respect and understand one another. It is only in this way that we can work together at finding solutions to regional and global challenges.

Dongseo has prepared a great summer program for you. We have fun activities planned, and interesting tours to join. Ultimately, though, the rewards you get from the program will depend on the efforts you invest. I guarantee that if you keep an open mind and participate fully in your classes and other events, you’ll have an amazing time at the ASP. This is a special opportunity to make new friends, and you should branch out from your own groups.

International networks are valuable. As you may know, Dongseo hosted the ASP in 2013. Since then, I’ve talked with many students who participated. They often tell me about how they’ve invited their friends to visit Korea again. Or they say that they’ve visited ASP friends in foreign countries. These meetings would not be possible without building and maintaining international networks. So while you are here, I encourage you to get to know as many fellow students as possible. Then, after you leave, keep in touch with those friends from time to time. Someday in future you might have the chance to help one another.

In addition to forming friendships, I hope you’ll use this chance to learn about Busan. This is the second largest city in Korea, and it has a lot to offer. Each year, it hosts major international events, and it has many impressive sites to see. Right now, we are in the heart of Busan’s film and media district. Next door is the Cinema Center, which you probably saw on your way in. Famous stars gather there when the film festival is in town. Also, Haeundae beach is not far from our Centum campus. With over 5 million tourists visiting per year, Busan is quickly becoming a hub city of northeast Asia.

Dongseo is also quickly developing as a global university. We have international partnerships with 217 institutions in 38 countries. And we operate branch campuses in China and the US. Right now, most of our students are away on vacation, but during regular semesters we have about 1200 international students from all over the world studying at our Busan campuses.

Today, we are celebrating the first day of the ASP. By the end of this three-week program, I am sure all of you will have many fond memories to cherish. I wish you the best during your stay at Dongseo University.

To close, I would like to thank all of the professors who are taking time away from their research projects to participate in the Asia Summer Program. I’d also like to thank the administrative staff at all participating universities who helped to organize this program. And, finally, I’d like to thank the ASP participants. You have started a big adventure by coming to Korea for the Asia Summer Program, and I sincerely hope it will be a special time in your university life.
